The Ghaṭikāsthāna Examination System is a traditional Shāstric evaluation method where candidates are examined orally by a panel of accomplished scholars, following the historic Ghaṭikā model practiced in ancient centres of learning such as Kanchipuram.
Any serious student or scholar who has studied a Shāstra directly under a Guru (गुरुशिष्यपरम्परा) may apply. Self-study alone is not considered sufficient for eligibility.
Yes. A candidate is free to choose any one specific text (ग्रन्थ) from the list of approved Shāstras made available by the Ghaṭikāsthāna.
Eligibility, the precise scope of examination, and the portions to be covered in the chosen Grantha are determined solely by the Vidvat Samiti (Panel of Scholars).
Within one month of submitting the application, and after receiving approval from the Vidvat Samiti, the examination date is finalized and communicated to the candidate.
The examination is conducted entirely as an oral examination (वाचिक परीक्षा), in accordance with the traditional Ghaṭikā method.
Questions related to the prescribed text are placed in a pot (घट). The candidate randomly draws a question and responds orally, strictly based on the text and its traditional interpretation.
For certain prescribed texts, a कण्ठपाठ (by-heart recitation) examination may also be conducted as part of the evaluation, wherever applicable.
Any candidate who successfully clears the examination is:
- Awarded a certificate of merit
- Conferred the title “Niṣṇāta” (निष्णात)
- Granted an honorarium
All of the above are formally issued by the Ghaṭikāsthāna.
The examination is conducted by eminent scholars who are authorities in the respective Shāstra. Their judgment is final and authoritative.
